Renowned local horseracing venue Beverley Racecourse has installed a state-of-the-art solar PV installation on its newly rebuilt stables – a significant milestone in its commitment to environmental stewardship and reducing its carbon footprint.

The 26-panel, 14.17kW solar PV system was installed by Green Building Renewables. Our York team completed the work, which has helped transform the racecourse’s new stables.

Why did Beverley Racecourse want solar?

Located in the town of Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire, the horseracing venue dates to the 18th century. It has recently undergone significant development with the rebuilding of its 70-year-old stables. Working with Malton-based Transcore, the racecourse’s new stables have been meticulously redesigned to provide modern and comfortable accommodation for the racehorses. The upgrade ensures the well-being and welfare of the horses, enhancing their performance and overall racing experience.

The rebuilt stables showcase state-of-the-art facilities and amenities tailored to meet the specific needs of the racehorses. From spacious stalls to advanced ventilation systems, the stables provide a safe and optimal environment for the horses to rest, train, and prepare for their races.

Our solar installation, composed of high efficiency solar panels strategically positioned on the new stables, will harness the power of the sun to generate clean and renewable energy. By embracing solar technology, Beverley Racecourse has taken a bold step towards achieving its environmental goals.

John Morley, Head Groundsman at Beverley Racecourse said, “The new stables offer incredible facilities for the horses that race here. The racecourse has been a part of Beverley for over 300 years, and installing solar energy on the new stables ensures that we are now ensuring it for future generations. It is a real, local success story to see the new stables built and the solar PV installed by another Yorkshire business from just down the road in Malton and Dunnington, respectively.”

The key benefits of a solar installation like the one at Beverley Racecourse for local businesses include:

  1. Renewable Energy Generation: The solar panels will convert sunlight into electricity, providing a significant portion of the stables power needs. By leveraging this renewable energy source, businesses can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.
  1. Carbon Footprint Reduction: With the adoption of solar power, businesses substantially decrease their carbon emissions.
  1. Cost Savings: Solar installation will lead to long-term cost savings for businesses. The racecourse will reduce its dependence on the traditional power grid by generating electricity on-site, resulting in lower energy bills and increased financial efficiency.
  1. Educational Opportunities: The solar installation at Beverley Racecourse presents a unique educational platform for visitors, event attendees, and the local community.

Sports venues are perfect locations for solar panel installations. They often have a lot of roof space available and use a lot of energy a lot of the time, so they are perfect places to consider solar PV and battery storage.

Our Managing Director, Chris Delaney, said, “We are delighted to have installed solar and provide our services to such a well-known and historic local venue as Beverley Racecourse. The new stables show their commitment to the welfare of the horses and the jockeys at the racecourse and reflect their commitment to the environment locally and nationally. They are a real example to other racecourses and sporting venues around the country on how they can future-proof themselves against volatile energy prices and meet environmental targets.”

The new stables were rebuilt by Malton-based Transcore; their Contracts Manager, Simon Handley, added, “We have built something special at the racecourse. The reconstruction of the stables at Beverley Racecourse demonstrates the commitment of the racecourse to maintaining high standards and providing the best possible care for the horses. It further solidifies Beverley Racecourse’s position as a premier racing destination, attracting both local and international participants and spectators alike. The addition of solar energy to the new stables ensures their long-term future. It was a great opportunity to work with another local business in helping the racecourse modernise.”
