Who is eligible for the BUS?

Eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) varies depending on the specific criteria set by the scheme.

However, in general, homeowners and non-domestic building owners in England and Wales may be eligible for BUS if they plan to install a heat pump or biomass boiler to replace an existing fossil fuel boiler.

What isn’t covered by the BUS?

  • Any home outside England or Wales
  • New build developments
  • Social housing properties
  • Hydrogen boilers and Hybrid Heat Pumps.

How much am I entitled to?

BUS offers the following upfront grants:

£7500 to support the installation of heat pumps and biomass boilers.

£6,000 off the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump.

How do I apply?

To apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), you will need to find an eligible installer who is registered with TrustMark or Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

The installer will help you through the application process, including submitting the application on your behalf.

Step 1 – Find an installer

To apply for the BUS, you will need to find an eligible installer and discuss your project with them.

They will then provide you with a quote for the work, including the cost of the equipment and installation.

Step 2 - Find the right heat pump technology

Your chosen installer will assess your home and current heating system to determine if you are eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and which type of renewable heating technology is best suited for your needs.

They will also help you complete the application process and submit it to the scheme administrator on your behalf.

Step 3 – Apply for the grant

Once your chosen installer has assessed your home and confirmed your eligibility for the grant, they will apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme on your behalf. As part of the application process, Ofgem, the government regulator for gas and electricity markets in Great Britain, may contact you to confirm that the installer is acting on your behalf.

Step 4 – Schedule your installation

Once your grant is confirmed, your Sustainable Home Installer will take care of your heat pump installation from start to finish.
